Towards Scalable Web Documents
نویسندگان
چکیده
Article summary. The current Web is running into serious scalability problems. The standard solution is to apply techniques like caching, replication, and distribution. Unfortunately, as the variety of Web applications continues to grow, it will be impossible to find a single solution that fits all needs. The authors advocate a different approach to tackling scaling problems. Instead of seeking a general-purpose solution, they argue that it makes more sense to look at each Web document separately. For each document, three issues need to be addressed: placement of replicas, required coherence, and best coherence protocol. The authors examine each of these issues, and identify the alternatives. However, forcing developers to decide on the best alternatives will turn the Web into an unworkable system. Therefore, a number of possible ways to reduce complexity is indicated. Also, the authors briefly discuss a wide-area infrastructure that can be used as a flexible basis for developing per-document solutions.

Large-scale search engines for the WWW retrieve entire documents effectively. However, they can be considered imprecise because they do not exploit and hence retrieve the semantic content of Web documents. Such content cannot yet be automatically extracted from general documents. Manually structuring Web documents, e.g. via mark-up languages such as XML1, allows more precise information to be r...
متن کاملAutomated Delivery of Web Documents Through a Caching Infrastructure
The dramatic growth of the Internet and of the Web traffic calls for scalable solutions to accessing Web documents. To this purpose, various caching schemes have been proposed and caching has been widely deployed. Since most Web documents change very rarely, the issue of consistency, i.e. how to assure access to the most recent version of a Web document, has received not much attention. However...
متن کاملScalable text classification as a tool for personalization
We consider scalability issues of the text classification problem where by using (multi)-labeled training documents, we try to build classifiers that assign documents into classes permitting classification in multiple classes. A new class of classification problems; called ‘scalable’, is introduced, with applications on web mining. Scalable classification utilizes newly classified instances in ...

متن کاملLogo to SVG
A picture produced by logo on the screen can be mirrored into its SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) description on the file. These files provide a high quality records (snap-shots) of logo screen to be included in other documents – web pages. Logo2SVG is a collection of logo commands, for MSW Logo, that by redefining turtle commands support the mirroring of turtle movement into the SVG.
